Objective
The purpose of the present exercise, Preparation of Check List of Flora & Fauna and a Conservation Plan is to ensure that the effects of the BALCO Coal Mining Project within the project area remain minimised. Towards this objective the Conservation & Management Plan provided the guidelines aimed at preventing minimize or mitigating potential adverse impacts of the project on wildlife and wildlife habitat.
The Study Area
The study area for the plan is restricted within 10.0 km radius around the mining base area based on approved ToR from MoEF which include Semipali RF, Sherdand Duapatra RF, Phatepur RF, Jabga RF, Sajpali RF, Dahidand RF, Sisringa RF, Chainpur RF, Semipali PF, Marpahatra RF and 10 flowing water bodies (Nadi / Nala).
It may be noted that the Core Zone (1070 ha.) has no Protected Forest and all the RF’s and one PF are located outside the mining lease area but, within 10 km radius of the core project area.
Approach
The study involves systematic process of identifying, predicting, evaluating the potential impacts on the wildlife and wildlife habitat resulting from the mining operation. The approach to the wildlife study for the proposed coal mining project is largely based on the information from Mine Plan and scheme, Biological studies and EIA, rapid field based study, Forest Working Plan, stakeholder consultations, relevant literature search from BSI & ZSI and interpretation of Topo sheet and satellite imagery.
The Wildlife Management Plan remains open for alteration to offer better protection to the local wildlife and wildlife habitat; it should not be interpreted as a static design but, remains flexible and open to evolve on the basis of future surveys and inventory and input from the concerned authority.
