Wildlife Conservation Plan - Jindal

IBRAD has been engaged by M/S JSPL to prepare site specific Wildlife Conservation Plan, so that it can help in obtaining necessary approval from Chief Wildlife Warden, Chhattisgarh.
Objective:
(i) Identify large forest reserves area in consultation with forest department and JSPL
(ii) Rationale for large forest reserve area
(iii) Mark the habitat on map and plan for redundancy
(iv) Protect or provide corridors between habitat patches
(v) Protect critical and rare landscape elements
(vi)  Link local and regional habitat plans
(vii) Maintain ecological processes in protected areas as per working plan
(viii) Development of Avi-fauna conservation
(ix) Plan for soil and water conservation

Strategy
The study involves systematic process of identifying, predicting, evaluating the potential impacts on the wildlife and wildlife habitat within the Reserve Forests (RF) and Protected Forests (PF) under Tamnar and Ghorgoda Ranges of Raigarh Forest division.

It was decided that a bio-geographical study would be undertaken to ascertain the distribution pattern and sustainability options of this high consuming, long ranging and socially cohesive species. Accordingly, emphasis was given on observations related to their habitat use pattern, transit behaviour etc.

As stated in preceding columns, phyto-sociological study was not undertaken though, identification of presently available fodder species were done primarily through direct observation of consumption behaviour. Wherever direct sighting was not possible while the groups were actually consuming, the fodder species preferred by elephants that are available in adjoining Sambalpur and Sundergarh districts of Orissa which this researcher has seen being consumed were added in the list of fodder (see Appendix 1).

It may be noted from the fodder list that even in the present depressed season (day temperature under the shed hovered around 480 Celsius during the present study period) 15 fodder species were identified while a few more remains unconfirmed.

The Wildlife Management Plan remains open for alteration to offer better protection to the local wildlife and wildlife habitat; it should not be interpreted as a static design but, remains flexible and open to evolve on the basis of future surveys and inventory and input from the concerned authority.

Extensive field studies were undertaken within the Reserve Forests (RF) and Protected Forests (PF) under Tamnar, Ghorgoda and Raigarh Ranges and observations made during the course of these study visits formed the foundation for this Management Plan.

Study Area:
The study area is located within Raigarh District of the State of Chattisgarh, an integral part of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh.  The State is largely located on the table land of Central India and the Eastern Ghats running in the south traversal these two states (MP and Chattisgarh).  The Chattisgarh Plains lies between Baghelakhand plateau and the Satpura. It stretches about 385 km east to west with a maximum axis of 400 km north to south.
