Study on NTFP in the Forests of South West Bengal

Time Frame: January 2011 to June 2011

The two main dimensions of the study are:

  • Classification of the FPCs and
  • Assessment of NTFPs and the Marketing opportunities.


The Scope of Work is as follows:

  1. Collect the available data and information in respect of all FPCs from each of the territorial divisions in the districts of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Burdwan and Birbhum districts
  2. To classify the FPCs of the five districts in “successful”, “Moderately Successful” and “poor” categories based on the specified criteria and indicators to be developed from the data collected.
  3. To select 5 – 10 FPCs in each division for sample survey encompassing the three categories of FPCs
  4. Prepare status report for each division on harvest/consumption with detailed information on NTFPs available indicating species, frequency of occurance, use, season of collection, threat status, trade etc, annual demand and the quantity extracted of 10 major identified species, demand supply status, local market price, quantity of local consumption and its money value, quantity marketed by FPCs and its money value, Money value of total harvest/collection.
  5. Basic information of market including facilities of storage, transportation to market place or to buyers, scope of making value addition etc
  6. Assess the Role of Forest Department in promoting sustainable production, harvest and harvesting of NTFPs in the study area
