Governing Body

The Governing Body members are elected for a term of five years by the Life Members of IBRAD.

The present Governing Body (2020 – 2025) consists of the following members

Professor S. B. Roy

Founder Chairman of IBRAD

Professor Roy has obtained his MSc degree in Anthropology and PhD in Sociology. He has studied Social Forestry at East-West Centre, the University of  Hawaii, USA, and developed himself as a trained ecological Anthropologist. Professor Roy has been awarded Fellow West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (FAScT). After serving for nearly 20 years, at the Anthropological Survey of India, he had served as Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has also served as Visiting Professor at different foreign Universities such as the IDPM, University of  Manchester, The University of Wales, University of Helsinki, Gaja Madah University, Indonesia, and University at  Kunming, China. He has delivered series of special lectures in many foreign countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Nottingham University, UK, USA, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam etc.

He has served as a member of different expert committees for the State and Central Government including Green India Mission, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, National Biodiversity Authority, Member of Task Force, Department of Technical  Education, Government of West Bengal. He also served as the State, Level Advisor For the World Bank funded Project of forestry for the Andhra Pradesh and has been the Lead Consultant, Management of Change, Health Sector, DFID, British High Commission, New Delhi.

Many of his concepts and methods are followed in the formal training for the IFS officers on Ecosystem Restoration, Integrated Landscape Management for Sustainable Tribal Development. His recent research on the Digital Ethnography for Tribal Development has become a popular method for the tribal development. He has published/ edited  14 books and published more than 45 research papers of which four papers are on the topmost searched papers on Google.

Dr. Shila Kundu Podder

Vice Chairman

Dr. Shila Kundu Podder has retired as the Keeper, Anthropology, Indian Museum, Kolkata in the year 2007. Dr. Kundu Poddar has obtained her MSc and PhD degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Calcutta. She was the Research Fellow of CSIR and carried out her research in Kolkata, Nadia and Murshidabad.

During her tenure in the Indian Museum she used to deliver lectures for the batch of students, vistors and dignitaries. She has been the coordinator for the development of Museum in Northeast India. She has participated in many inter state exhibitions in the Indian sub continent and has vast experience of communicating with the larger audience through exhibitions. She has published number of papers in journals and edited books.

Dr. Shyamal Kumar Nandy

Secretary General

Dr. Shyamal Kumar Nandy retired as Assistant Anthropologist (Cultural Anthropology), Anthropological Survey of India. Dr. Nandy has obtained his MSc and PhD degree in Anthropology from the University of Calcutta.

He rendered several years of research in Medical Anthropology, tribal studies, peasantry, Community Genetics and Health across different states of India. He has led team of researchers of Anthropological Survey of India for implementation of different projects like Bio Cultural Diversity, Environment and Sustainable Development (village study) in Sundarbans, Study of the Cities under the project Hriday and Prasad etc.

He has published five books and reviewed three books. He has published 31 research papers in peer reviewed journals.

Professor P.K. Roy Barman

Professor Pranay Kumar Roy Barman has served for more than 33 years in the banking sector including serving as the Chairman Regional Rural Bank and retired as Assistant General Manager of United Bank of India. Besides, he has 14 years of experience in teaching and administration in AICTE approved Management Institutes in the capacity of Principal, Professor, Chief Financial Officer, and Director (Finance & Academics). Professor Roy Barman has obtained his MSc (Agr) in Soil Science as a topper in his batch, MBA with specialisation in Financial Management, PhD in Management and CAIIB (Banking) from Indian Institute of Bankers. He is empanelled as PhD Supervisor in the MAKAUT and Seacom University and has been guiding the PhD students in Management.

He has conducted Research Project on Micro credit in collaboration with Govt. of West Bengal (SIPRD , KALYANI) and has carried out research on performance of SHGs in Bishnupur Block under South 24 Parganas District. He has guided eight PhD students. Professor Roy Barman has published five books and more than 50 research papers in the national and international journals.

Dr. M Haque

Dr. Maruf Ul Haque has obtained his MSc and PhD Degree in Anthropology from Ranchi University and retired as Research Associate from Anthropological Survey of India in the year 2010. During his tenure with Anthropological Survey of India, he handled different national, regional and individual projects on human variation, nutrition, disease, BMI, gene sequencing among the tribal and nontribal populations living in different parts of India including Andaman and Nicobar islands. Prominent population groups he studied are Bhil, Bhutia, Bondo, Chakma, Charan, Khond, Karen, Lepcha, Mog, Munda, Oraon, etc. Based on his research works he has published more than a hundred research papers, five books, and also edited a few books.

He has also been associated with Akashvani, B.B.C. and Radio German and covered several national and international sports events as a journalist and interviewed several renowned sports personalities

Dr. B. N. Sarkar

Member

Dr. B. N. Sarkar has obtained his BSc and MSc degree in Anthropology from the University of Calcutta as a topper in his batch and a Gold Medallist. He has also earned his PhD degree from the same University. Dr. Sarkar has retired as Superintending Anthropologist from Anthropological Survey of India. He has been awarded Fellow West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (FAScT) in 2013. He is acting as the Guest Faculty of West Bengal State University, Visiting Fellow of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and Central University, Hyderabad Academic. After his retirement from the Anthropological Survey of India he is serving as a Research Officer to the Department of Backward Classes, Government of West Bengal. During his tenure with the Anthropological Survey of India he has done path breaking research work among the Onge and Jarawa tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was instrumental in setting up the DNA laboratory at the Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata. He was one of the key team members of Genome project.

Dr. Sarkar has been guiding three number of PhD students, two of them have already been awarded with the degree.

Dr. Aniruddha Dey

Dr. Aniruddha Dey has obtained his MSc and MPhil degree in Anthropology and Sociology and PhD in Anthropology from Sambalpur University. He is having wide experience of working at the rural as well as urban sectors on the development issues. His research areas include Disaster and Climate Change Resilience, Food Security-Safety-Nutrition, Environment Education, WASH, Knowledge Management, Networking, Partnership Management.

He is vastly experienced in implementing grass roots development projects related to Poverty Analysis and Effective Micro Planning, Micro Finance Management, Empowerment and Capacity Building, Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Displaced people, Community Forest Management, Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Resilience, etc. He has worked for influencing policy for grass roots development action. He has received two International Awards, The International Cultural Diploma of Honor  and The 1998 ERM Excellence Award in the category of GLOBAL PROJECTS for Social Assessment of Infrastructure Project.
